Number Lines- Orchard Grove Level 1 & 2 AusVELS •Recognise, model, read, write and order numbers to at least 100. Locate these numbers on a number line (ACMNA013) •Investigate and describe number patterns formed by skip counting and patterns with objects (ACMNA018) •Recognise, model, represent and order numbers to at least 10 000 (ACMNA052) Description Students were introduced to each lesson to modeled whole class examples on the board to practice placing various numbers on the number lines and grasping skip counting. Each activity for the lessons were created with different sections that progressively got more challenging that followed the AusVELS progression points for Levels 1 to 3. This Sequence ran over 3-4 sessions Teaching Strategies •Explicit teaching- Learning Intention •Collaborative group work •Focus groups •Open-ended questioning •Independent work •Concrete materials •Modelled examples •Progressive activities Assessment •Teacher observations and corrections •Work Samples •One on one questioning •Showing understanding when posed questions •Students explaining reasoning |
This learning sequence was introduced to the students as a whole class activity where they were taught the overall concept and how to use number lines. When going over the students answers of the activities it was evident that some students understood the concepts and some students didn’t. I needed to work with a focus group to use concrete materials to better explain it so they were able to grasp the idea. Only a few students who were at a very high level were able to complete the open-ended activity these were students working at level 3 as they were able to complete the whole progressive number line activities. These activities allowed me to see who needed more support and work with closer.
POLT 4.4 uses strategies that challenge and support students to question and reflect “Tanya became skilled in providing number line maths tasks across a range of level 1, 2 and 3. Use of AusVELS maths elaborations and student work samples, supported Tanya in making judgments about student abilities.”- Kathy Costaras, Orchard Grove Primary School. |
